We know how important it is to have a nice, healthy smile. It can help with confidence, first impressions, and even overall health. But it goes beyond that initial interaction as well. When talking to another individual, it’s not hard not to miss dark silver or amalgam fillings dotting the back teeth.
Tooth-colored fillings, also known as composite resin fillings, are a solution to that problem. Serving as both a restorative and cosmetic procedure, the fillings closely resemble the color of your natural teeth while still repairing damaged teeth. The basic procedure for these fillings is similar, but different material is used.
When are fillings needed?
Fillings are usually required when a tooth is being adversely affected. It is important to address any kind of tooth issues as soon as possible to prevent the spread of decay. Once the tooth has been cleared of the decayed and broken down structure, the filling can be added.
This serves two purposes: the filling will prevent the spread of disease and restrict any more bacteria from invading the tooth. It will also allow the patient to comfortably use the tooth again. Fillings are easy to maintain with simple brushing and flossing.
Of course, the best fillings are no fillings at all. That’s why daily brushing and flossing, along with regularly scheduled visits to the dentist, are so important. By keeping your teeth healthy and strong, you’ll reduce the need for fillings down the road.
What is the process with a tooth-colored filling?
The first step is to remove the diseased and weakened tooth structure, as well as removing any remaining filling material that has failed. The tooth is prepared by etching the tooth surface and then applying a bonding agent to adhere the filling to the tooth.
Is there any other difference between amalgam and composite fillings?
Silver amalgam fillings have been used for many years, and are still used today, although much less frequently. There are situations where amalgam is the best option. Composite resin bonded fillings are more commonly used today for a number of reasons, but mainly because of their aesthetic value.
